The state-owned power company says the blackout situation that has been hitting the coastland hard over the past week is getting better, with full power expected to return to suffering consumers of Berbice and Demerara by Sunday.
Regarding the operations at the Skeldon factory where the co-generation plant was down since last weekend following industrial action by sugar workers, the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) disclosed that the co-generation facility has been gradually restored and increasing levels of generating capacity made available to the grid.
“It is expected that the maximum available capacity from Skeldon will be available prior to the evening peak demand,” GPL said.
The power company said that consumers should also plan using the load shedding guide that it released on Wednesday which will remain until today.
Regarding the down engine at Kingston, a key replacement component for the turbo-charger of the No. 3 diesel generator at Kingston 2 power plant was expected to arrive last evening.
Arrangements for its immediate installation were in place, with the engine expected up by midnight.
According to GPL, the level of scheduled power outages was expected to decrease with the repairs to the generator last evening.
Another engine, the No. 1 Diesel Generator at the Kingston 1 Plant, which is undergoing planned major overhaul remains on schedule to return to service on Sunday, GPL said.
There has been anger over the blackouts and the explanations given by GPL.
