– Says allegation is politically motivated and timely executed
By Abena Rockcliffe
An injunction has been granted barring Johnny Anthony Welshman from publishing, whether in the print or electronic media, any material relating to allegations he made against Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman.
This was made known through a press statement released by the Alliance For Change (AFC) last evening. The Party noted that the injunction was granted yesterday in the High Court.
The AFC said that Welshman has also been ordered to remove all malicious content from his face book page.
“In his Ex Parte Affidavit in support of the application for the injunction, Trotman has also sought damages in excess of $50 million for libel contained in a statements allegedly made by Welshman and published in the Stabroek News, Guyana Times and on Welshman’s Facebook page.”
The AFC expressed its unequivocal support for its Co-Founder and Speaker of the National Assembly against the “recent spurious and unfounded allegations” leveled against him.
Following a press conference yesterday morning, Trotman faced the media and expressed full confidence that he will be vindicated.
The Speaker, in the compounds of the National Assembly insisted that he is innocent and said that he has not a doubt in his mind that the recent allegations were politically plotted.
“I have every confidence that not only will the police do a good and thorough investigation but that I will be completely exonerated so I am going to cooperate and if I find them lapsing, I am going to get behind them, but I am alright ,” he said.
The Speaker said that four or five years ago such an allegation would have had an extreme effect on him and “I would have ran away but I know I have God on my side, so I would not be bothered.”
Asked why he was so confident that his good name would have been cleared, Trotman responded, “A lie cannot stand and every lie needs a column of other lies to keep down one, this morning I look at it and smiled. I can’t say more but everything is crumbling.”
The House Speaker admitted that he furnished Welshman with a letter of recommendation but insisted that it was a very general document that was provided only because he knew the young man’s family.
He pointed out that usually a recommendation declares knowing the person but in that particular letter he said that he knew the family.
Trotman said that when his accuser appeared at his office “I didn’t recognize him…I can’t say that is the first time I saw him.”
Trotman said he has contacted the young man’s parents and he was given all assurance that they will be in touch with the media soon.
