Georgetown’s Colts escaped Linden’s Victory Valley Royals lasso in the fourth
quarter Sunday night to tramp away with an impressive win in the commencement of the cross-nation exhibition games, which precede an upcoming National Division I Basketball Series.
Colts untied itself from the defensive work of Royals late in the fourth quarter to win 86-78 with Shelroy Thomas scoring 28 points; newly acquired centre, Linden’s, Shane Webster amassed 18 points while guard, Rayon Cummings and forward, Niko Fraser had 12 and 10 points respectively.
Forward, Harold Adams scored 27 points while guards, Chris Williams scored 21 points and the resurgent Marlon Pollydore 12 points in a valiant effort from a young team that recently won the Royals 20th Anniversary title in the Mining Town, Linden.
The momentum changed deep in the final quarter when Thomas scored a lay-up with 4:40 left in the game to give Colts a 72-71 lead. Thomas then drilled a three-point dagger a minute later that further extended their lead without Royals scoring on possession.
Thomas’ crunch-time takeover continued when he drained yet another three-point jumper with 1:45 left in regulation and the score 80-74 in their favour. Pollydore nailed a jumper from down-town to add some poetic relevance to the game, but Thomas responded with four points to slow any transfer of momentum to the opposition.
The final quarter began with both teams locked at 59-59 points. Thomas and Webster combined for 22 points in the final quarter to take Colts home. The matchup began favourably for Colts as they took a 22-12 lead early in the first quarter.
Royals struggled early in the game, but Williams and Adams slowly warmed to the task, finding their form on the wooden surface to outscore Colts in the second period. Royals erased a deficit it had incurred to go into the halftime break trailing 37-41; Royals slowly built up its momentum to draw level at the end of the penultimate period before the resilient Colts untangled itself in the final five minutes of the game to win.
In the first game, Georgetown’s Nirva Knights defeated Canje Knights 62-61 with Akil Lewis scoring 24 points for the Georgetown side. Owan Walton scored 20 points. For the Berbicians, Jason Gladstone had 17 points while Steve Roopnarine and Kevon Emmanuel netted 16 and 14 points respectively.
