The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) recently commenced the construction of a new decontamination facility, which will be utilized by the hospital’s sanitation workers.
Ongoing construction of GPHC’s Decon facility.
According to GPHC’s Director of Facilities Management, Kamal Harricharran, the building is estimated at $7.1M, with Simcon Engineering receiving the contract to construct it.
He noted that the building will house three bathrooms, three toilets, a storage room and locker-room facilities for the staff after their daily duties.
Harricharran said that the hospital has 16 sanitation workers who will be utilizing the facilities for their daily decontamination process.
“Sanitation workers deal with the removal of infectious and non-infectious waste material from the hospital. This facility is being built so that the staff can clean and decontaminate themselves after work, so as to promote cleanliness and prevent the spread of diseases in the hospital,” he said.
He noted that the sanitation staff is mainly responsible for monitoring the hydroclave system and maintaining cleanliness of the hospital’s environment.
The construction commenced on September 8 and is expected to be completed by November 8.
