The Church of the Nazarene located at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, celebrated sixty years of existence and service to the local community on Friday last.
Several exciting activities were planned to mark the milestone, including a Community Fair (barbeque dinner and a concert) and a Medical Outreach Clinic held last Saturday, which provided medical services free of cost to members of the community. The highlight of the programme of activities will be the grand church service today at 14:00 hours.
During its sixty years of existence, the Church had a total of fourteen Pastors, some of whom emerged from the laity.
The current pastor of the Church is Reverend James Morgan who has held that position for a number of years.
According to Pastor Morgan, the Church has over the years been actively involved in providing for the less fortunate.
“We have provided food, clothing, paid medical and funeral expenses and made donations in cash and kind to orphanages and impoverished individuals,” he said.
The Pastor added, “While our main emphasis is on things spiritual, we also encourage our members and friends to embrace good health practices and pursue education in order to enjoy a very good life. As
a church we give thanks to Almighty God for reaching the sixty year milestone. We give honour, glory and praise to God for the difference He has made in the lives of so many believers.”
The Church of the Nazarene is an international organisation with its headquarters in Kansas City, United States of America. It operates in 159 countries with a membership of about 2.3 million.
In Guyana there are two districts – Demerara/Essequibo and Berbice. Each district has a Superintendent who oversees the churches under his purview.
It is an evangelical Christian denomination which emphasizes “holiness” as a way of life for believers.
The Church of the Nazarene had its origin in the year 1954 and was the first established Christian Church in the Herstelling community.
