Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day is an annual celebration of her life and an invitation for everyone to “Play Unified to Live Unified!” This global call to action stems from Mrs. Shriver’s teaching that on the playing field, we forget about our differences and recognize our mutual humanity.
This special day will be celebrated in Guyana when Special Olympics Guyana host a Unified cricket match which will be bringing together persons with and without Intellectual Disabilities at the Providence Stadium on September19, 2014 commencing at 13:00hrs.
According to a release from Special Olympics officials Wilton Spencer, “On EKS Day, we invite you to join us in playing unified and teaching the world to live unified. We are demonstrating Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s enduring vision by calling upon athletes, families and friends to come together in a day of inclusive sport and play.”
Participating schools will be David Rose School for the Handicapped, Special Needs School East Bank Demerara and Diamond Primary School.
Diamond Cricket, a new type of cricket, which can accommodate twenty players (with and without intellectual disabilities) per team will be played.
Diamond Cricket is used as a catalyst to foster inclusion and have fun at the same time.
