GCB senior 4-day Inter-County tournament bowls off today…
By Zaheer Mohamed
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior 4-day Inter-County Competition bowls off today with Berbice
facing Demerara at Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Essequibo playing the GCB Development squad at Demerara Cricket Club (DCC).
The Berbicians are brimming with confidence after winning the 50-over tournament last Saturday and will look for double success. Narsingh Deonarine marshaled his troops well in the 50-over competition and a lot will depend on him once again. Berbice have brought in Royston Crandon, Jason Sinclair and Steven Latcha in their squad which is being coached by Hubern Evans and managed by Albert Smith.
Seon Hetmyer is expected to partner Kandasammy Surujnarine at the top of the order while the middle order seems strong with the likes of Deonarine, Devon Clements, Crandon and Jonathan Foo included.
The Bourda pitch is expected to favour spin and Berbice definitely have the fire power in this department in left arm spinners Veerasammy Permaul and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai. Steven Latcha, Deonarine, Crandon and Clements are likely to offer support. Keon Joseph bowled with pace and hostility in the 50-over format and should share the new ball with the improving Raun Johnson.
Demerara certainly have the ability to match Berbice in every department and will be led by Vishal Singh, while Christopher Barnwell will serve as his deputy. The home team posses a strong batting line up with Trevon Griffith and Rajendra Chandrika expected to open. It will be interesting to see how their middle order which includes Singh, Barnwell, Shemroy Barrington and Robin Bacchus handle the Berbice spinners. Demerara have named four fast bowlers in their line up with Seon Daniels, Paul Wintz, Gavin Moriah and Police left arm pacer Randolph Knights, but only two are favour to make the final eleven. Raj Nanan bowled impressively in the 50-over competition and another good showing here should ink his name on the national selectors list. Zaheer Mohamed and Ameer Khan are the other spinners in the team.
Essequibo are a talented team, but their performance will depend on how fast they adjust to this format since most of the
cricket being played there are of limited overs. Their batting will depend a lot on Kevon Boodie who became the first player to register a double century in the 50-over competition at this level when he achieved the feat recently against the National U-19 team. Royan Fredericks, Ricardo Adams and Royston Alkins are expected to lend support.
Anthony Adams, their most successful bowler in the 50-over tournament is once again expected to lead their attack with support from Alkins, Mark Tyrell and Keon Davis.
The GCB Development squad has replaced the National U-19 team in the competition and should provide firm competition for Essequibo. Their batting will be centered on skipper Steven Jacobs, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer and the talented Keemo Paul. Leg spinner Steven Sankar, Sharaz Ramcharran and Yatesh Dhanpaul are likely to lead their bowling.
