An almost three-year feud between two neighbouring families from Martin Luther Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam escalated on Friday when a student nurse from one of the warring households chopped a mother and daughter.
Bernadette Burnham 59, was chopped on the fingers, wrist and thigh, while 31-year-old Ronetta, who went to her mother’s assistance, was chopped on one of her arms, shoulder and wrist.
Their alleged attacker is seconded at the same hospital where the victims were treated.
The ensuing dispute had caused both families to be brought before the courts and a probation officer. In November, 2013, Ronetta Burnham and their alleged attacker, who is a student nurse, were placed on a one year bond.
Mrs. Burnham said that she was cleaning her yard yesterday morning when the student nurse began to verbally abuse her.
Burnham said that she ignored the younger woman at first, but when the abuse continued, she retorted: “I am a big woman and I have my work do. You are happy and do not have anything to do”.
According to the injured woman, the student nurse continued to hurl abuse at her, then attacked her with a chopper. Mrs. Burnham said that she tried to defend herself with her broomstick but was chopped on her hands.
Ronetta Burnham, a third year Business Management Student at the University Of Guyana , said that after hearing her mother scream she ran to her assistance but was chopped on one of her hands, shoulder and wrist.
Fortunately, a neighbour managed to disarm the attacker, while the injured women were taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The alleged attacker is expected to be charged soon.
