Dear Sports Editor,
Guyana has completed their worst performance in the CFU Championships since 1995, failing to win against low-ranking sides Dominica, St Lucia, and St Kitts& Nevis. The Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in line with their ‘’development’’ policy, named an 18-man squad which included 17 debutants, and as such the team paid for their lack of experience on the pitch.
During their three games, the Golden Jaguars failed to score one single goal, making the decision not to call up the GFF Super League’s top-scorer, Gregory ‘’Jackie Chan’’ Richardson, to the squad even more puzzling. In 2012, Richardson was on the score sheet as St Lucia were defeated 3-0 by Guyana in qualifiers, yet fast-forward two years later to last Friday and that same St Lucia team emerged victorious against Guyana 2-0, the first victory the small island has had over Guyana since 1991. Is this the type of ‘’development’’ the current administration seeks?
Whilst we cannot blame the young men who featured in the team for the poor results, this was the first taste of international action for virtually all of them, the GFF must hold accountability for choosing a side which lacked experience, lacked any players from leading club side Alpha United, and lacked any overseas-based players aside from defender Walter Moore.
When contacted, GFF President Christopher Matthias and Technical Director Mark Rodrigues were unavailable for comment. If any other national side had left a major international tournament without scoring a single goal, questions would no doubt be asked about the suitability of the Head Coach, Technical Director and President of the Federation.
