A Kaneville, East Bank Demerara labourer accused of chopping his brother to death, was committed to stand High Court trial by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday.
Rohan Teekaram, 42, will appear before a Supreme Court Judge and Jury for trial at the next sitting of the Demerara Assizes. He is accused of murdering his brother Jairam Teekaram at their Kaneville, East Bank Demerara residence between April 20 and April 22, last.
Jairam Teekaran’s body was found in a clump of bushes with the head almost severed on April 22, last.
Allegations are that the siblings had an argument during which the accused reportedly chopped Jairam to death with a cutlass, and then hid his body.
The bloodied body of the 40-year-old was reportedly discovered around 08:00 hours on April 22, last, by a neighbour. It was found under a piece of carpet hidden away in the bushes at the side of his home.
Three days later, his older brother was arraigned for his murder and a preliminary inquiry (PI) subsequently got underway at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
During the PI, eight civilian and five police witnesses testified on the State’s behalf. Rohan is unrepresented by legal counsel
The court heard sworn testimonies from Naithram Teekaram, son of the deceased, another relative, Jasodra Teekaram, Hemwattie Latchman, Komal Gopaul, Mohammed Afeez, Wellington DaCosta and Glenn Baptiste, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Michael Kingston, Detective Corporal Devon Lowe and Detective Corporal Jomo Williams, Detective Constable Delicia Browne and Detective Corporal Christopher Dharamraj.
The Chief Magistrate ruled, yesterday, that a prima facie case of murder was made out against the 42-year-old.
As it concluded yesterday, the Chief Magistrate called on Teekaram to lead a defence and he opted to offer an unsworn testimony. He stood in the prisoners’ docks and for five minutes told the court his version of events.
