Magistrate Zamena Ali yesterday remanded 55-year old Dhupaul Singh to prison when he made his first court appearance for the murder of Mahaica farmer Balkissoon called ‘Balkay’ on Tuesday.
Singh, who was unrepresented by counsel at yesterday’s hearing was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read to him at the Vigilance Magistrates Court.
He is accused of murdering Balkissoon at the Helena Number Two, Mahaica Backdam during an argument.
It is alleged that Singh dealt Balkissoon a single chop to his neck, almost severing it completely.
The prosecution appears to have an airtight case and is expected to present two eyewitnesses, which includes the dead man’s son, during the Preliminary Inquiry.
The matter was investigated by Detective Corporal Tirat and others.
Singh appeared dazed throughout the brief hearing. He kept staring at the dead man’s wife whose eyes were fixed on him from the time he emerged from the police vehicle which brought him from the Mahaica lock-ups to the court.
He will return to court at Mahaica on September 26.
