The man, who was reportedly behind the wheel of the beverage truck which killed an elderly pedestrian six weeks ago, was released on $1M bail when he appeared in court.
Ravin Singh, 27, of Lot 46 North East Grove, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Singh, a driver employed at the Guyana Beverage Incorporated, is accused of driving in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting motor lorry GNN8476 on July 14, last on the Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, thereby causing the death of Rajmattie Ram, of Triumph, East Coast Demerara.
He was not called upon to respond since the charge was laid indictably.
According to information received, Ram, a pedestrian, was struck down by a motor lorry at the junction with Robb Street, around 14:30 hours that day.
At the time of the accident, the elderly woman was holding onto her grandson’s hand as they attempted to cross to the other side of the busy roadway.
She reportedly sustained severe head and bodily injuries when she was dragged a short distance before the truck came to a halt.
The 73-year-old was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
In court yesterday, Singh’s attorney Debra Kumar applied for reasonable bail. She said that he was no flight-risk and explained that although the accident occurred six weeks ago, her client has been reporting to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday as was mandated of him.
Kumar claimed that there is an eyewitness who saw that the woman was struck by a bus and not the truck. The Prosecution was represented by Police Inspector, Michael Grant who did not object to bail.
The Magistrate granted bail. The case will be called again on September 9 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
