Tonight, eight teams will compete but only four will progress as semi finals spots in the Ansa McAl/Stag Beer ‘West Side’ 5-a-side football tournament will be at stake.
The quarter final matches this evening at the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac will see the opening clash between one of the tournament’s two undefeated teams; New Road Eagles coming up against Broad Street, the lone City side left in the competition.
Even though they played undefeated, New Road Eagles have not really impressed the masses unlike their foes and opponents tonight. Broad Street seems sturdy and seasoned to this format of football and can very well clip the undefeated New Road Eagles.
It will be interesting to see if Showstoppers can create an upset when they clash with pre-tournament favourites Tuschen Up-Top-Youths in game two. Behind Devon Millington and the entertaining John ‘Brown Boy’ Waldron, the side established themselves as the ‘team to beat’ in this inaugural tournament.
The Uitvlugt and Stewartville Gunners game will ignite a rivalry that’s beyond football itself. Stewartville never failed to impress and have silently planted themselves as one the teams to watch for in the tournament.
Neighbours Uitvlugt on the other hand, featuring the ‘Bobb brothers’ will do their best to ensure that they remain in the money hunt but its anticipated that it will be the biggest game of the evening.
Vergenoegen All-Stars, the tournament’s other undefeated team and De Kendren Village will match skills in the night’s final game. Both sides have made it this far while establishing themselves as legitimate contenders for the top prize.
The semi-finals are set Friday with the tournament curtains coming down on Sunday at the saem venue.
