All systems are in place for the hosting of the fourth Neal and Massy Group of Companies’ 10km Road Race, commonly known as the AINLIM 10k, which gets underway this morning from 6am with the starting point set at Vreed-En-Hoop, West Coast of Demerara.
Defending champion, Cleveland Forde, who has won all the AINLIM titles to-date, is set to reign again today with any challenge unlikely. The race has shifted its course this year from beginning at Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara.
For the first time, it will be journeying across the Demerara Harbor Bridge from Vreed-En-Hoop to finish in front AINLIM at Ruimveldt. The steep climbs and slopes of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, which is largely asphalt over metal, could prove challenging for the athletes.
It will be interesting to see how athletes maneuver over the bridge, which is also more windy and salted in air, brining into focus athletes breathing – another crucial element for distance running. Forde’s foes will hope those odds work against him.
Nathaniel Giddings, Dennis Horatio and Grivon Grant are some names to watch in the race today. Meanwhile, unless US-based Euleen Jossiah-Tanner competes, Alika Morgan could be earmarked for yet another title.
Morgan has competed on such terrains before including Suriname’s High Bridge and might be best adjusted to conditions today. The athletes will be competing for cash prizes and trophies in a race, Neal and Massy CEO, Deo Persaud, hopes to take nationwide.
