A teenaged miner is currently nursing a broken leg at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after a pit caved in on him at a gold mining site in Kuribrong, Potaro-Siparuni, on Monday last.
Clinton Moses, 16, said that he was working as a “stone-thrower” at a “private” mining site in the area.
Moses said that around 16: 00 hours, he approached the “foot of the mining pit” where he was working, to pick up some stones, but the pit wall suddenly buckled and fell on him. Luckily, other workers responded immediately, as the youth was buried under a pile of mud and clay. The Kuribrong resident said that he was rushed to the nearby “Japarts Mining Camp”, where he was able to acquire transportation to Georgetown. Moses said it took almost a day’s journey for him to reach GPHC, where he was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit for treatment.
The youth suffered a broken right leg and injuries to his chest, which he says are causing him difficulty with his speech.
