Residents of No.19 on the East Coast of Berbice are once again voicing serious concerns as their area has been flooded. The residents who are mostly large scale farmers are blaming the authorities for the latest and continuous predicament.
The resident said that the ‘old pump’ that was placed to drain the area hardly works. They reiterated what was said earlier, in that they “were fooled” that they would have been given “a new Surendra Pump”. But instead an old hydro flow pump was sent to the area.
The residents are counting their losses after the area was hit by flood waters after just a day of rainfall.
The pump, which is wrapped with plastic bags and other items, always has a starter problem.
According to the residents it will work for a few days before developing some problem or the other. It recently started to smoke and reports are that the head joint blew.
Another problem, the residents stated, is that the drain that leads water to the pump is too narrow and is clogged up at some parts. Roadside drains in the area are also clogged up and contribute immensely to the flooding.
