…says “not one law was violated” by investors
President Donald Ramotar has condemned what he says are recent attacks by certain quarters of the society on Chinese investments. Noting that he wished to add his voice to the discourse pertaining to Chinese businesses in Guyana, the Head of State charged that the country must have foreign investment for its continued development.
The President noted that in the business sphere of these Chinese investors, no laws were broken, yet sectors of the society continue to “launch massive attacks.” The Head of State pointed out that, ‘We (government) have said over and over again; we must have investment in our society. We create special economic regimes to attract both local and foreign investment to develop the potential of our country.”
Although the President did not direct his comments to the ongoing revelations that Chinese logging company Bai Shan Lin is harvesting excess lumber in the country’s interior, the matter of the Chinese firm is the latest to have grabbed public attention.
It was noted by Ramotar that, “this (attack) is a case where not a single one of our laws were violated. None of these things have happened, there is no raping of the interior, but we see this massive attack, and one wonders what the motive is. What is behind this thing?”
The President said he is however, happy that businesses are still showing confidence in the country’s economy. He stated that local and foreign investors, by their actions, show that they do not share the views of some quarters of society.
President Ramotar made these comments; while delivering the feature address during the launching event of a local construction company joining the aviation sector. The company hopes to start domestic flights, but will eventually seek ways into the regional market. The President said that government has invested tremendously in the aviation sector; with specific allusion to the ongoing expansion and re-modeling of the recently refurbished Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
He urged further that air transport in Guyana is critical. He said the aviation sector is vital in connecting the interior with the Coast. “Talk of opening the interior must be linked to the air transport sector.” The President noted that there are still many areas in the interior that are not accessible by road and water ways.
It was also noted that the general development of many local sectors is also directly linked to the air transport sector, especially that which involves mining. While the emphasis on the tourism sector is understandable, the President said, the interior has to be opened to access and develop the country’s resources.
