Apart from being one of the most popular sports around the world, cricket also serves as a major unifying force and that is the main reason organizer Dexter Garnett has decided to arrange a T20 game dubbed ‘Cricket for Unity’.
The match was originally scheduled for July 5, but due to persistent rainfall in the city the game has now been rescheduled for September 6 at the Demerara Cricket Club ground. The fixture pits Kaieteur Thunders against Roraima Strikers and will get under way at 19:00hrs.
Yesterday at Windjammer International Hotel, Queen Street, Kitty, the coaches of the teams were presented with the uniforms which are being sponsored by Colours Boutique of Robb Street.
Speaking at the ceremony, Garnett stated that the match will serve to bring people together and promote a friendly atmosphere. “It will be fun for the players and fans so one can expect lots of excitement”, he added.
Coach of the Roraima Strikers, Clive Grimmond said that the game should generate an abundance of enthusiasm adding that his team is a balanced one while Kaieteur Thunders’ Coach Quasen Nedd indicated that the match will help to enhance the society in a number of ways.
He indicated that most of the players have played the game at some level and an exciting contest is anticipated.
Windjammer International Hotel is one of the sponsors of the event and Manager of the entity Carey Griffith informed that they are happy to be associated with the initiative. He acknowledged the importance of such a game and made a call for other businesses and fans to support the event.
