Police are hunting for a teenager whom they claimed shot and killed 24-year-old Mark Drexel London, during an alleged
attempted robbery more than two weeks ago at Kaneville, on the East Bank of Demerara.
According to the police, the suspect, who is no older than 17 years, was identified by a friend of the deceased who was near London when he was fatally shot, and other persons who claimed to be eyewitnesses to the incident.
“Since the shooting, we have had persons coming forward, saying that they saw him (suspect) firing the shots. London’s friend also identified him… we have had more than 10 persons saying that he (suspect) shoot the victim,” a police source said.
It is unclear whether the shooting death of the carpenter was robbery-related, since eyewitnesses claimed that the suspect boldly walked up to his target and demanded him to “gimme de ting, gimme de ting.”
Kaieteur News understands that the teenage suspect made no attempt to injure or rob London’s friend who was with him at the time.
“This man (suspect) walked up to Mark… I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but when he pulled the gun, Mark and his friend started to run and this boy (suspect) only firing shots at Mark,” a Kaneville resident who claimed to be an eyewitness to the shooting had told this newspaper.
Kaieteur News understands that the police had obtained information that the suspect was hiding at his mother’s home at Vryheid’s Lust on the East Coast of Demerara, but when a police patrol turned up at the house, the suspect was nowhere to be found.
“This guy is young, he is still in school… this is the time you think about your books and what you want to become… not about weapons and killing people,” a police source said.
According to information, London, who was shot to his right shoulder, had gone into the Kaneville community, which is reportedly called “the house for criminals,” to meet with a friend who recently came out from the interior.
Kaneville is a small community located at the back of Grove, between Craig and Diamond New Scheme.
