One of the latest centenarians from Essequibo is an accomplished musician.
Clement Carrington Abrahams, known as “Uncle Clemmie” or “AB”, was born on August 7, 1914 and `hails from Adventure Village, Essequibo Coast.
Family members gathered on the special day in which “Uncle Clemmie” had been looking forward to, telling his children that he just, “wanted to know what it will feel like to be 100 years old.”
He celebrated his birthday with a thanksgiving service surrounded by his family, priests, fellow parishioners and friends.
“Uncle Clemmie”, whose wife Ivy has passed away, spent most of his working life at the Essequibo Boys School (EBS), The Youth Corps (Tumatumari) and the New Opportunity Corps (NOC).
While his work was in the area of Animal Husbandry, he was also an accomplished musician. He was the Director of the EBS band (similar to the Police Force Band) and for decades the organist at the St. John’s Anglican Church, Airy Hall.
Quite an affable and easy-going individual, he says that he lives by the steadfast belief that for everything “God will provide”. While his sight and hearing may not be as they were years ago, one of his daughters believes that he “hears conveniently.”
His children Joan, Vivian and Maurice, daughter-in-law Bridget and grandchildren Adrian, Lee-Ann, Lindani and Dennis were among those wishing the “Old Man” the best.
They had one bit of advice for him – “having completed your century, take a new guard, play with your bat close to your pads and continue scoring till close of play.”
