Having been arrested, charged with neglect and released on $10,000 bail on Monday, the mother of the five boys who were abandoned at a Perseverance, Essequibo Coast, house, was yesterday scheduled to appear at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
However, when the matter was called before Magistrate Sunil Scarce, the defendant, Angela Bodhaley, was a no-show. The matter was adjourned to September 4, in order to facilitate the issuance of a summons for her to attend court.
Based on Section 49 of the Child Protection Act of 2009 “A person who by commission or omission wilfully contributes to a child being a child in need of protective intervention commits an offence and is liable.”
According to allegations, Bodhaley had left her five sons, whose ages range from 14 to six, without adult supervision for a period of at least three weeks. The five were reportedly forced to take care of themselves, a practice that they had grown accustomed to since their mother, according to reports, would, on occasions, leave them unattended. The most recent period of desertion was however reportedly the longest the mother has stayed away.
Reports are that the boys were not enrolled to attend school and the eldest of the five was required to seek odd jobs to help sustain both his mother and siblings.
The boys’ plight was first highlighted by some concerned residents who brought the matter to the attention of this publication.
During a visit to the home in which the children were left, one of the boys told Kaieteur News that ahead of being abandoned by their mother he was forced to do all the household chores. The child disclosed too, that when he refused to adhere to his mother she would simply throw out their clothes and burn them, leaving them with merely a few pieces of clothing to share among themselves.
During this publication’s visit to the residence, one of the younger boys was seen engaged in the task of washing a few pieces of their clothing.
Following collaborative interventions by Police ranks of the Suddie Police Station and the Child Care and Protection Agency, the boys were on Friday removed from the home which was said to be in an unsanitary condition.
They were reportedly entrusted into the care of a relative during the past weekend. However, reports reaching this publication suggest that the mother had worked in collusion with some neighbours to have the boys returned to her.
The consequent development was measures being taken by the Child Care and Protection Agency, with support from Police ranks, to have the boys be placed into protective custody. However, reports are that only four of the boys are currently in protective custody as the eldest of the lot was reportedly sent by his mother to work at sea.
Reports coming out of the Child Care and Protection Agency suggest that the body will be embracing a zero-tolerance stance when it comes to any form of abuse meted out to children.
