The fifth annual Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic got underway yesterday at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden and based on early action, fans are in for a treat going into the evening and today’s sessions.
Billed as Guyana’s premier athletics championship, the event attracted a large vociferous crowd on opening day and Grenada’s renowned athlete Kenisha Pascal won the women’s 3000M, clocking a time of 11 minutes, 34 seconds. She beat Guyana Police Force’s Janella Jonas (11 minutes, 49.10 seconds) and Carlissa Atkinson of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) who ran 11 minutes, 53.70 seconds respectively.
Cleveland Forde turned in a blistering performance to storm to the Men’s 5000M title finishing in a time of 17 minutes and 45 seconds. Grivon Grant placed second (18 minutes, 12.50 seconds) with his Guyana Police Sports Club teammate, Nathaniel Giddings (18 minutes, 13.40 seconds) third.
Patrick King captured the men’s long jump with a leap of 6.89M. Linden’s Winston Caesar and Guyana Defence Force’s Leon Bishop both jumped 6.87M to tie for second place.
Sprinters Brenessa Thompson and Olympian Winston George were in impressive form as they stormed through their 100M and 200M heats and will run in their respective finals today.
Thompson clocked 12.90 seconds to win the 100M heats and came back to run 26.20 seconds in the 200M heats. She will be up against Leota Babb, Letita Myles, Onika Eastman, Daniel Clarke, Tiffany Cato, Mearisha Carter and Ebony Nelson in the finals.
George, one of the country’s leading sprinters, brought the MSC to life with his magnificent speed,
running 10.60 seconds in the 100M and 22.00 seconds in the 200M.
Trinidad and Tobago’s CARIFTA Games 800M Gold medalist Mark London looked on course to win the 800M event today after a comfortable win in the heat yesterday, stopping the clock at two minutes, 2.70 seconds. He will contend with Trevor Scotland, Dennis Horatio, Kevin Bayely, Ornesto Thomas, Tyson Bentick, Derrel Pellew and Desmond Amsterdam.
Guyana Police Sports Club leads the team standing with 54 points, followed by Guyana Defence Force on 49 points.
Upper Demerara Schools and Mercury Fast Laners are tied in third with 13 points.
Jagdeo giving Exxon 102 cent to collect 2 cent.
