Police ‘B’ Division Cricket Club created a major upset when they defeated the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club Cricket team in a specially arranged 20/20 cricket match which was played last Sunday at the Area H ground in Rose Hall Town. In fact the game went down to the wire with a super over being the deciding factor.
The game, which was played as part of the Police Force community outreach and sporting activities, saw the cops winning the toss and electing to take first strike with the first ball being bowled by Commander Police ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph. Joseph then challenged a few of those gathered on the field to a sprint to the pavilion to show his athleticism; embarrassing some of those on the field.
The match was reduced to 16 overs a side. At the end of their turn the lawmen had chalked up a challenging 125 with Constable Andrew Woolford blasting 57 runs and Constable Gordon Wilburg contributing 28, being the principal scorers. Bowling or Rose Hall Town, Brandon Persaud led the way with 4 for 8, while Eon Hooper and Delbert Hicks snared two apiece.
Rose Hall Town in their reply at first found runs hard to come by. However a late rally by Eon Hooper and Clinton Pestano with 25 runs each brought them within striking distance. The batsmen were able to plunder 19 runs from the last over to tie the scores and end with 125 for 5 off their allotment of 16 overs.
Bowling for Police Andel Doris was the main wicket taker with 3-37 runs, while Carl Campbell and Ray Hutson snatched one each.
The cops were superior in the super over as they restricted Rose Hall Town to 6 runs, leaving Police with a meager requirement of 7 runs to win the match. Police quick slapped the ball about the field and cleared off the required 7 runs after the third delivery.
At the presentation ceremony, trophies and prizes were presented. Among the trophies presented were to the winning and runner up teams and outstanding players by Commander Brian Joseph and Deputy Commander ‘B’ Division, Senior Superintendent Marlon Chapman and other senior officers of the Division.
Commander Joseph also took the opportunity to make a special presentation of a trophy to Police ‘B’ Division cricketer and U-15 Captain, and national U-15 all rounder Kevin Sinclair, for his outstanding performance at the recently concluded West Indies Cricket Board Under-15 Tournament.
