Police have responded to the recent rise in violent crime with a cordon and search operation that resulted in the arrest of at least 75 people suspected of armed robbery, drug trafficking and other offences.
A police release stated that the operation was carried out yesterday in A, B and C Divisions .
In “A” Division, police searched 26 buildings in Sophia and Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, while arresting 50 men and six women, pending investigations into robbery under arms, trafficking in narcotics and break and enter and larceny.
Police said that an unlicensed 16 gauge sawn-off shot gun, 695 grammes of cannabis sativa and nine grams of cocaine were found during this operation.
In “B” Division (Berbice) six buildings were searched in the Alness, Limlair, Nurney and Salton area, Corentyne, during which an air rifle was recovered. Seven men have been arrested pending investigations into robbery under arms and break and enter and larceny.
In “C” Division (East Coast Demerara) police searched 26 buildings in Sophia, Vryheid’s Lust, Cummings Lodge, Turkeyen and Better Hope South areas. Nine men and three women were arrested pending investigations into robbery under arms and break and enter and larceny. Two motor cycles that are suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained have been seized, police said.
Recently released police statistics reveal that 80 people were murdered between January and July of this year, in comparison to 73 for the same period last year. The police statistics also show a 27 percent increase in the use of firearms during robberies within the past seven months.
The trend appears to be continuing in August.
On Emancipation Day, Anderson Garnett, 30, was shot in the face while fighting with a gunman who had attacked him
in ‘C’ Field, Sophia.
On Monday, a bandit shot 29-year-old Marvin Cumbermack dead in South Sophia and escaped with his motorcycle. On that same night, Kwame Smith of Eping Avenue, Bel Air, was shot in the neck during an attempted robbery.
And on Thursday, 24-year-old carpenter Drexel London was shot dead in Second Field, Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, by a man who was trying to steal his gold chain and phone.
