After a bruising encounter with many attacks, traps and counterattacks, the much improved Fyrish Black Sharks were able to prevail in their thrilling encounter with arch rivals East Canje Knights as they edged home 60-58 when play in the Legend Classic Basketball Tournament continued in Berbice on Sunday last at the Fyrish Basketball court.
From the start of the game, both sides seemed well prepared for the match up. But in the end it was the underdogs Fyrish Black Sharks that were just a bit quicker as they eventually blanked the swords of The Knights.
The Sharks were out fast and raced to an 18-12 lead in the first quarter.
Knights bounced back in the second quarter with some good counterattacks and rallies to lock the second segment at 38 apiece as they retired for the half time break.
The Knights opened the scoring in the third quarter, but were quickly caught by the Sharks as the battle continued in the third quarter which ended with the Sharks in the ascendancy 48-46.
The fourth segment continued much the same way and with less than two minutes to go the Sharks had a three point lead which was tied with a three pointer from Steve Roopnarine with less than a minute to go and the scores tied. The Knights went ahead with a Cledwin Cort basket. Joseph pulled it back immediately for the Sharks and with seconds remaining Franklyn scoring for the Sharks as they run the clock down for the eventual 60-58 win.
Linden Joseph with a game high 21 points led the way for the Black Sharks with support from James Franklyn with 10.
For the Knights leading scorer Steve Roopnarine was good from down town with four-three pointers in his 16 points, while support came from Cleveland Hunt 15 and Cedwin Cort with 11 points.
The tournament continues tomorrow at the Ithaca basketball court West Bank Berbice with New Amsterdam Warriors travelling to meet the Ithaca Hardliners from 16:00hrs.
The competition is being played on a round robin basis and is being sponsored by Ponai’s Pharmacy and Nand Persaud Group of Companies. The coordinator is Vibert Garrett. (Samuel Whyte)
