Two women, who cursed at ranks from the country’s main anti-drug unit and obstructed them while they attempted to
conduct a raid, were each fined $5000 yesterday.
Latisha Schultz, 24, and Tenisha Williams, 23, pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour when they appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that the incident occurred during a raid conducted by ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) at Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown yesterday.
He said about 06:15 hours, the ranks encountered the two women in the yard of a rented property at Lot 4A Laing Avenue.
Jones said that the raid was led by Inspector Caesar who told the women that they would be checking for narcotics. Williams told him “Nobody ain’t searching my f*****g house!” and disturbed neighbours who came out of their homes to witness the commotion.
The Prosecution told the court that shortly after, Schultz also expressed “Nobody ain’t searching my f*****g place neither.”
Despite several warnings, the women reportedly continued to curse at the ranks. They were both cautioned and arrested. They were also charged, and hours later, appeared in court.
The women were represented by Attorney at Law Mark Conway who claimed “they were mostly speaking amongst themselves.” He said that they had already apologised to the members of the unit. The lawyer said that this was the first time either of the women was ever charged and beseeched the court to administer a fine and give them a stern warning.
Magistrate McLennan, in response, admonished them for their actions. She stated “These are the same police that you call upon when you are in trouble or when you need help. You have no right interfering in police business.”
She told the women that it is a serious offence to interfere with members of the force when they are carrying out their duties.
They were eventually ordered to pay the fine. The Magistrate instructed that if they failed to pay the fine, they would spend seven days in jail. Schultz and Williams were also placed on a peace bond for 12 months.
