A 21-year-old man, who claimed that he was simply thirsty, broke the door of a popular fast food establishment in Linden,
went in, sat on the floor, and waited until the police came to arrest him.
Three days after the incident, the man, Otis McCurdy, a farmer from Coomacka Mines, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face a charge of damage to property.
Appearing before Magistrate Ann McLennan, McCurdy admitted that on Monday, last, he damaged a door of Church’s Chicken establishment, at Main Street, McKenzie, Linden.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones explained that about 04:00 hours that morning, McCurdy went to Church’s Linden Branch, “picked up a brick the size of a football” and walked to the front-entrance glass door.
The security guard on duty approached him and asked what he was doing, but McCurdy ignored him. He hurled the rock at the door, shattering the glass, went into the restaurant and sat on the floor.
It was reported that the security guard repeatedly asked McCurdy to come out of the building, but he remained seated. Responding to a report from the guard, police ranks removed McCurdy from the premises.
Jones related that McCurdy was cautioned and arrested. Further investigations led to him being charged.
During mitigation, Magistrate McLennan asked McCurdy why he broke the door, and in a barely audible voice, the man said that he was thirsty. After hearing the bizarre excuse, she questioned the detective whether the accused was of sound mind. But he could not provide an answer.
McCurdy was subsequently sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
