– hammer Tallawahs by 10 wickets
Openers Lendl Simmons and Martin Guptill led the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a comprehensive 10-wicket
demolition of the Jamaica Tallawahs in the second playoff match of the Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament yesterday.
Man-of-the-match Simmons smashed 71 off 43 balls and Guptill hammered 66 from 46 to steer the Warriors to 138 in 14.5 overs. Jamaica Tallawahs scored 134-6 after they were inserted by the Warriors at Warner Park in St. Kitts.
Chadwick Walton led with 34, Nkrumah Bonner and Andre Russell chipped in with 21 and 20 respectively. The Warriors’ bowling was up to the task and the Tallawahs found it difficult to increase the scoring in the latter stages.
Chris Gayle and Chadwick Walton gave the Tallawahs a steady start with a stand of 55. The pair started cautiously but was quick to pounce on the bad balls. Gayle flicked and pulled Ronsford Beaton through mid wicket for fours while Walton punched Navin Stewart to the cover boundary and drove him through point in his first over.
Gayle greeted James Neesham with a boundary through mid wicket, but the introduction of Narine gave the Warriors the breakthrough. The off spinner had Walton caught for 34 in the 10th over. He faced 35 balls, hitting three fours and one six.
Simmons then held a well judged catch off Neesham to get rid of Gayle for 19 (3×4). Adam Voges and Nkrumah Bonner added 15 for the third wicket before Voges chipped too early and was stumped by Ramdin off Hafeez down the leg side for seven.
Andre Russell and Nkrumah Bonner featured in a fourth wicket stand of 32. Russell pulled Beaton to the mid wicket boundary and tucked Santokie for another, but suffered from the most unfortunate of run outs.
Bonner’s drive struck the tip of Santokie’s finger before hitting the stumps and found non striker Russell well short of his ground.
Russell scored 20 off 12 balls. Bonner (21) then hit Santokie to Hafeez at cover the very next delivery to leave the score at 107-5. Taylor played a little cameo hitting 17 off nine balls towards the end. Hafeez supported Narine with 1-19; Santokie had 1-22 and Neesham 1-26.
The evening however belonged to Simmons and Guptill as the pair batted with assurance, their running between the wickets was well complimented by some lusty hitting. Guptill hit David Bernard for four over mid off and Simmons smashed Vetorri for a maximum over long on to get the response going.
Taylor was the most expensive of the bowlers (36 from 3 overs); Guptill effortlessly flicked him for a maximum over fine leg, pulled him for four in the said region before smashing the pacer over long on for another maximum in his second over.
Gayle rung the changes but to no avail. Guptill greeted Rusty Theron with a maximum and Simmons deposited him for another as the Warriors raced to 87 without loss at the half way stage. Simmons reached his fifty in fine fashion; he clobbered Taylor for a six and pulled him for consecutive fours to arrive at his half century off 30 balls. Guptill who reached his 21st fifty in all T20 games with a double and then drove Theron to the cover boundary to seal the issue. Simmons’ knock contained seven fours and three sixes while Guptill smashed six fours and two maximums. Warriors will now take on Barbados Tridents in the final tomorrow at the same venue.
