Two gold miners were killed when the mining pit they were working in at Marudi South Rupununi caved-in on Sunday last.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that one of the miners, Clifton Rodrigues of Aishalton, was trapped beneath tons of gravel after the walls of the pit that he and two other colleagues were working in collapsed.
Another miner who was pulled from the pit before Rodrigues’ body was found succumbed to his injuries.
The incident occurred at the lucrative Mazwa Mountain.
Sources in Rupununi told this newspaper that three miners were trapped about 300 feet below the surface. However, unconfirmed reports stated that one of them miraculously managed to escape to safety.
The incident is yet another case of miners being killed in gold mining pits, apparently because of poor mining practices. This is despite the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission repeatedly warning against unsafe procedures.
