The National Intermediate Amateur Boxing tournament, one of the key events put on by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), will be staged August 23 and 24 at California Square at East Ruimveldt.
President of GBA, Steve Ninvalle, informed that the event will take on an international flavour after Jamaica indicated that they will be fielding boxers for the tournament. This is the second outing of recent for a tournament at the East Ruimveldt venue following the National Novices, earlier in the year.
Ninvalle further disclosed that the association has invited US-based Super Heavyweight boxer Quincy Small, the younger brother of former Guyana World Champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, to participate in the event.
Small had indicated his willingness to represent Guyana at the just concluded Commonwealth Games, but due to several problems, the arrangements could not be made in time.
Small, however, is hopeful of representing Guyana at the Olympic Games and is forging ahead with his preparations and Guyanese will get the chance to witness more of him in the not too distant future.
This pending international flavour event is the third to be staged by the GBA here following the Goodwill in February and ‘Nuff Cuff’ programme in May when boxers from St. Lucia participated.
The GBA is still looking for additional funding to offset the expenses associated with staging the event and is seeking corporate intervention.
Next on the cards for the association, according to Ninvalle, is the DDL Under-16 tournament on August 29 and 30, while the National Open and Champion of Champions tournaments are other major annual competitions put on by the GBA to be staged in the coming months.
