A 54-year-old Canadian citizen has been indicted on drug smuggling charges following the recent airport bust of over
15 pounds of cocaine in achar, packets of milk and custard powder.
Three days after the bust, Struetikant Persaud was taken before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking.
Persaud was allegedly found by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) with 7.148 kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in packets of milk powder, custard powder and achar last Friday as he was preparing to board a Canada-bound flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
Responding to the charge on Monday, Persaud pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for bail through his lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat.
The lawyer told the gathering that Persaud resides at Lot 42 Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice. He said that Persaud is a father of two and is employed as a painter. The court heard that Persaud was convicted in 2004 on a similar charge.
CANU Prosecutor Oswald Massiah did not relay any facts to the court. He stated that Persaud was a passenger on an outgoing Caribbean Airlines flight and that he had provided two different addresses.
Persaud was refused bail by Magistrate Ann McLennan who concluded that no special reason was advanced by the defense. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 15.
