Police have detained a man and his wife in connection with a shooting incident on Hog Island, Essequibo River, on Monday night, which left one man dead, and another man nursing injuries at the Suddie Hospital.
The couple was detained after their version of what transpired that night differed significantly from that given by the survivor.
Police in a press release yesterday said that at around 21:00 hours on Monday, Rudolph Persaud, 51, of Hog Island, Essequibo, and Roy Williams, 21, of Port Kaituma, North West District, were walking along a dam at Northern Hog Island when shots were discharged in their direction.
Persaud was hit to his abdomen and neck, while Williams was hit to his chest.
Both men were taken to the Suddie Hospital where Persaud was pronounced dead on arrival, while Williams was admitted for medical treatment.
“A man and a woman have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with the investigations,” the police statement said.
This newspaper understands that the two people are Hog Island resident Randy Katwaroo and his wife.
Initially, this newspaper had received reports that the men were shot by bandits who were attempting to storm the small island by boat.
It was initially reported that Katwaroo was at his house on the northern side of the island, along with two other men, when they heard a boat approaching.
According to the reports, at that time they heard rapid gunshots and Katwaroo ran away. He later called his mother, Raywattie, who related to this newspaper what he had told her.
The woman said that her son told her that he hid in the bush until he heard the boat leave. When he returned to his house he found one of the men dead. The woman said that her son later went back into hiding whilst awaiting the arrival of the police on the island, fearing that the “armed bandits” would return.
However, when detectives carried out their investigations, they found loopholes in Katwaroo’s version of events.
A senior police official who is close to the investigations, told this newspaper that judging from the layout of the crime scene, Katwaroo’s explanation seems farfetched.
This newspaper spoke to the injured Williams at the Suddie Hospital where he is being treated for gunshot wounds to his stomach. The young man said, he does not know the person who shot him.
Williams told this newspaper that he and Persaud were imbibing alcohol on a dam on the island when shots were fired at them, killing Persaud.
Williams worked with Raywattie Katwaroo, Randy Katwaroo’s mother, as a labourer.
Mrs. Katwaroo who operates a boat that transports goods from Parika to Buck-Hall and Hog Island, denied that her son was the shooter.
