A 20-year-old handyman has reportedly told police that he choked 57-year-old Ann Mendonca in her kitchen last Friday before killing her in her bedroom. Police said that the suspect, who did odd jobs for Mrs. Mendonca and other neighbours, “readily confessed” after police detained him on Monday night.
The youth is a relative of a neighbour with whom Mendonca had a dispute, and the suspect reportedly claimed that he killed Mendonca after she made disparaging remarks to him about the relative.
Police were reportedly led to the suspect after he told an acquaintance that he had killed Mrs. Mendonca. After being confronted with the allegations, the suspect reportedly admitted to the crime, but denied robbing his victim afterwards.
Kaieteur News was told that the handyman, who has lived all his life in Plaisance, told police that he entered Mrs. Mendonca’s house via the open back door last Friday.
Mrs. Mendonca was cooking at the time, and he reportedly sneaked up on her and choked her until she collapsed.
He then took his victim to her bedroom, where he tied and suffocated her. Police believe that the handyman also beat Mrs. Mendonca with a metal bar which he found in the house.
But Kaieteur News understands that the alleged killer denied stealing anything from the slain woman’s home.
Gregory Mendonca, who found his mother’s body, has said that his gold chain and two rings, as well as a DVD player, three tool sets and a computer hard-drive were missing from the house.
Ann Mendonca, 57, was found dead in her bed at around 21.00 hrs on Friday. Her hands were bound with duct-tape and a plastic bag was tied over her head. Two pillows were also placed on her face.
Gregory Mendonca said that he last saw his mother alive at around 06.30 hrs on Friday, when he left for work. He returned home at 21:00 hours and found all the lights off, while the back door was ajar.
After switching the lights on, he eventually went into his mother’s bedroom where he found the body.
Police had received reports that a known character was seen leaving the victim’s premises via the back fence.
Police have also questioned several other residents.
A post mortem is likely to be performed today.
