National Under-17 champion and Caribbean No.2 seed Narayan Randhani and Christopher Persaud were the only victorious players for Guyana when play in the Caribbean Regional Badminton Championships (CAREBACO) served off in the land of Reggae, Jamaica on Monday at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium University of Technology, Kingston.
The Sunburst sponsored Ramdhani easily disposed of Jamaican Shamar Hunter in their Under-17 Boys singles, round 1 encounter, 21-8, 21-7 to advance to the quarter finals. The experienced Ramdhani was clinical in disposing of his opponent and looks set to take care of his next opponent.
Jonathan Mangra was not that lucky as he went down to Jamaican Matthew Lee 21-19, 21-15. In Under-17 Girls play, Ambika Ramraj was competitive but not enough and she lost to Christina Hastings of Jamaica 21-13, 21-14.
In Under-19 Boys singles rivalry, Guyanese Ronald Chang Yuen lost to Sabeel Foster of Barbados 21-3, 21-7.
The other win for Guyana on the opening day came from Christopher Persaud who turned back the challenge of home boy Allantae Daley in an exciting duel 24-22, 21-10, 21-14.
The tournament continued yesterday with action in the Under-13 Girls Singles, Under-17 Girls Doubles, Open Men Singles.
Meanwhile, Guyanese players Priyanna Ramdhani was seeded No. 1 in the Girls Under-13 Singles and No.2 in the Girls Under-15 Doubles with Amanda Haywood of Barbados while Narayan Ramdhani got the second spot in the Boys Under-17 Singles and along with Jonathan Mangra was seeded No. 1 in the Boys Under-17 Doubles.
