One man was shot and wounded and is a patient in the New Amsterdam Hospital, after his family was ambushed by bandits on the Black Bush Polder Public Road yesterday afternoon.
Police had set up road blocks in Berbice and were on the hunt for the three bandits who conducted the daring daylight stick-up and robbery. The men shot the driver of the motor car, Jerry Babulall, before escaping with a quantity of cash, jewellery and cell phones.
According to information, Jerry Babulall, his wife Gaitree and his mother Roshanie Babulall of Johanna South Black Bush Polder, left their home around 09:00 hrs in their Toyota 212 motor car, PKK 2200, to go shopping.
Reports are that the family visited the Republic Bank Rose Hall Branch where the man’s mother withdrew some money. The family then went and did some shopping at various locations before heading home around 14:00 hrs.
The vehicle had just turned off the Corentyne Highway at the Adventure Junction in the Black Bush Polder road, and was about a mile down, when a Silver grey Fielder Wagon motor car drove past them at high speed. The car suddenly stopped abruptly in front of them and blocked the road. Before they could realize what was happening, two men came out of the vehicle armed with guns and discharged a round towards the driver striking him in his right arm. The round also damaged the windscreen and the left side door and window.
The bandits then proceeded towards the car and robbed the occupants of their cash, jewellery and cell phones. The men then made good their escape.
The family members could only recognize the letters HC on the getaway vehicle.
Jerry Babulall was rushed to the Mibicuri Hospital where he was treated before being transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital and admitted for emergency treatment.
The police were contacted and responded promptly. A shot gun pellet was found in the vehicle. The family felt that they were traced from the bank and the entire thing was a set up.
Investigations are continuing.
