– another shot in neck in Eping Avenue
A 29-year-old Guyana Water Inc. employee was shot dead shortly after 20.00 hrs last night in Section ‘E’ South Sophia by a gunman who made off with the slain man’s motorcycle.
Marvin Cumbermack, of East La Penitence was shot in the chest and succumbed outside the Mercy Wing, located in South Sophia. Police said that the killer came to the scene on a bicycle, which he left there.
Residents recalled hearing about four gunshots and then seeing the GWI employee lying on the parapet, while the gunman rode north out of Sophia on the slain man’s motorcycle.
Eyewitnesses said the gunman was fair in complexion and was wearing a dark-blue jersey and a pair of three-quarter pants.
Ingrid Arthur, the slain man’s sister-in law, said that Cumbermack had picked up her daughter earlier in the evening from lessons. He then dropped off the child at ‘B’ Field, Sophia and was reportedly heading to work when he was attacked.
Residents and relatives expressed outrage that paramedics from an ambulance came to the scene, but left without picking up the body.
The body remained on the parapet for over an hour before crime scene ranks and mortuary attendants arrived.
In recent weeks at least three Sophia residents have been shot and robbed while passing through the community, and residents have appealed for increased police patrols.
Meanwhile, police are also probing the shooting of another man identified as Kwame Smith of Eping Avenue, Bel Air, at around the same time last night.
Kaieteur News understands that the victim was riding a CG motorcycle when he was shot in the neck.
He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
In another incident last night, police detained a Pigeon Island, East Coast Demerara man who allegedly discharged a shotgun and a handgun during a confrontation with his wife over his children.
Police identified the suspect as John Singh and said that he was licenced to carry firearms.
