Applicants, who have been inquiring about the status of Turn-keys homes at Providence, East Bank Demerara will need to wait another 18 months before they are completed.
This disclosure was made by Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, who was at the time spearheading a tour of several housing development projects along the East Bank of Demerara on Saturday.
Within the past weeks, concerned applicants have inquired about the “turn-key” homes for which they had made payments but are yet to receive an update.
During last Saturday’s tour, Minister Ali noted that while most of the housing projects along the area have been moving apace in terms of infrastructural development and population, the Turn-key Homes Project at Perseverance East Bank Demerara is still in its initial stage of development.
“Perseverance is a representation of what the other projects located at aback of Eccles and New Providence looked like in their early stages before basic infrastructural features and other essentials were added.”
Minister Ali said that despite minimal setbacks owing to the inclement weather, the project has been moving apace.
Ali said that the project has since created about 400 job opportunities in the areas of construction and upon completion, roads through the community will serve as links to a highway connecting Diamond, East Bank Demerara to Ogle East Coast Demerara.
Last year, the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Housing and Water’s Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) launched its 1000 homes initiative at Perseverance, East Bank Demerara.
Perseverance Scheme is located directly behind the Guyana National Stadium on the East Bank of Demerara, approximately five miles from the capital city. At the launch last year, the Minister had noted that the housing scheme should take a maximum of eight months to develop, once surveyors cleared the area in a timely manner to expedite the process.
There are at least 50 Turn- key homes currently under construction in the community, which serves as part of the East Bank Development Project.
The Turn-key housing initiatives are pilot projects in which Government “partnered” with contractors to build move-in-ready homes.
Under this initiative, the Ministry has been constructing two-bedroom homes at a value of approximately $4.9 million, which are being sold to qualifying applicants.
