Prison officials are investigating the circumstances under which an inmate whose name was given as Victor Larry was found dead at the Camp Street prison yesterday.
The prisoner was found dead in the Capital Division which houses remand prisoners. Reports reveal that Larry who is of Amerindian ancestry was charged for murder and had been on remand for the past two years.
The circumstances are unclear how the remand prisoner died.
Some inmates are blaming the prison officials who were on duty Saturday night for Larry’s death, since they claimed that he had been requesting help for several hours but wardens refused to go to his aid.
“This man was hollering Saturday night for pain, but the prison authority does not open the Division in the nights because they are fearful of escapes in the night and they barely have Warders at Camp Street Prison… this morning (yesterday) the man was stiff, stiff and they open up the Division and take out the body. The man was very sick, and they did nothing to help, the jail only giving pain tablets for everything,” One source within the facility told this publication.
The Capital Division, which was built for approximately 50 prisoners, now has over 450.
