The Grenadian Athletic Association have confirmed the participation of three athletes to compete at the 2014
Boyce/Jefford Track and Field Classic, which will be held in Linden, August 16-17 at Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
One of the Caribbean’s best middle distance athletes, Kenisha Pascal, who is no stranger to these shores, will return to compete in the International Women’s 1500m. Pascal will also run the 400 metres for the first time at the meet.
Kemon Herry and Marcelle Phillip, who will both run in the International Men’s 400m and 800m events, have also been identified to compete in the meet this year. Coach, Kwame Hypolite, will accompany the athletes to Guyana next week.
Pascal is always among the favourites to win the 1500m race, having placed among the top three in the last three years. Only Marian Burnett and Jevina Straker have beaten Pascal in what is one of the marquee races of the competition.
This year, Pascal will have her work cut out against Trinidad and Tobago’s, Tonya Nero, who is also confirmed to run in the 1500m race. Nero recently competed at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and will be in tremendous form.
Police Progressive Youth Club’s Jonella Jonas will lead the local ladies in the race after her rise back to sublime shape. Jonas was one of the Champion Athletes after dominating Guyana Police Force Inter-Division Championships last month.
The field for the race is expected to be deep since clubs have submitted three names each to run in the race. Six Clubs have been registered for the Boyce/Jefford Track and Field Classic V with six international races scheduled for the two days.
Meanwhile, Herry and Phillip will have their work cut out in both 400m and 800m events. The field in the International 800m, especially, is very deep with Police’s, Kevin Bayley and Guyana Defence Force’s, Cleveland Forde leading the local men.
Trinidad has also confirmed, multiple CARIFTA Games gold medallist, Mark London, to run in the 800m. London will compete in Canada this weekend before making his way to Guyana later this week for the competition.
Dennis Horatio, the current 800m record holder with 1:55.90 set back in 2011, will also compete this year as well as Trevor Scotland. With such a field to line up for the race, the record may very well be under threat with a paced race expected.
