A teenage girl yesterday told a senior city Magistrate that she punched and beat another girl with a glass bottle because she made “certain signs” to her while she was conversing with her ex-boyfriend.
Nineteen-year-old Christine Calder of Garnett Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Calder, a Customer Representative of Qualfon Inc., was charged with unlawfully assaulting Shonette Herod, thereby causing her actual bodily harm, on July 20, last, at the Georgetown Seawall.
She pleaded guilty and was placed on $20,000 bail pending a probation report and sentencing.
Prosecuting the case, Police Inspector Michael Grant explained that the two women had a misunderstanding, during which the defendant became annoyed and punched Herod in the face.
According to Grant, the victim received several wounds after Calder lashed her to her back and face with a glass bottle. The matter was reported and the victim was examined by a doctor at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Addressing the court, Calder explained that she was ‘chilling’ at the seawall when she observed Herod speaking to her ex-boyfriend. Calder claimed that Herod showed her “certain signs”, so she confronted her.
The teen will return to Court on September 19.
