A 20-year-old trainee enrolled at the Felix Austin Police College yesterday admitted to stealing a colleague’s cellular phone. He was released on $50,000 bail pending a probation report.
Following his first arraignment, Tyrone Cort of Manchester Village, Corentyne, Berbice, is set to appear before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court again on September 19 for sentencing.
The larceny charge against him detailed that between August 3 and 4, last, at Adventure Corentyne, Berbice, he stole one Samsung Galaxy cellular phone valued $53,000 from his colleague, Jermaine Humphrey. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Police Inspector Michael Grant, who prosecuted, explained that Humphrey noticed his cellular phone was missing after waking up from a nap. He reported the matter and investigators traced the cellular phone to a female.
When contacted, she reportedly told the Police that the phone was given to her by Cort.
The Court heard that when interrogated, Cort admitted to stealing the phone and he was charged for the offence.
Addressing the court, the police trainee said that after he stole the cellular phone he gave it to the girl’s brother to “keep.”
In response, the Chief Magistrate granted him bail and probation report was ordered.
Cort has to report to the Whim Police Station every fortnight, commencing August 15.
