Dear Readers,
The recent Emancipation celebration which honored Dr. Martin Luther King jr. and Nelson Mandela, while ignoring Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham and Walter Rodney, begs the question. Emancipation from what?
To add insult to injury, the keynote speaker at the event was the Prime Minister Samuel Hinds. Maybe this explains why, no mention was made of these two African Freedom Fighters
This celebration may move from TRAVESTY to MASQUERADE, and will come to symbolize
1—A celebration of our freedom from the chains of PHYSICAL slavery, and
2—Our continuing incarceration in the PRISON of MENTAL slavery.
I will offer a few (brief) points in support of the above statements.
i—In the mid-seventies, I attended a function at the National Park, where LFS Burnham, spoke of the struggles against apartheid and European domination in Africa. He pledged Guyana’s financial contribution to the freedom struggles (Fifty thousand dollars( $ 50,000) per year. He asked the audience for their contribution. I went to the stage, deposited five dollars ($5) and shook his hand.
ii— Burnham as Prime Minister\President invited a number of African leaders to this country.
iii-Boycotted the 1976 Games in Canada in support of the position taken by African countries
I am sure others can add to this list of achievements of Burnham in relation to Africa.
Burnham is deserving of the Oliver Tambo Award, regardless of the conclusion of the COI investigating Walter Rodney’s death.
I take this opportunity to highlight Rodney’s contribution to Africa and Africans through his writings
West Africa and the Atlantic Slave Trade (1969)
History of the Upper Guinea Coast, 1545-1800 (1970)
How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972)
A History of the Guyanese Working People, 1881-1905
Groundings with my brothers—?
The Burnham –Rodney conflict epitomized TRAGIC IRONY
Study the scenario leading up to the murder of Patrice Lumumba, and you will develop a deeper understanding of MANIPULATION, CONSPIRACY ,and DIVIDE & RULE tactics. There are many lessons to be learnt.
As we face impending National Elections, supporters of Burnham and supporters of Rodney cannot afford to remain divided
NOW is the time to start the HEALING PROCESS.
George
