R&D Engineering Services Inc. continued to have its brand attached to the Boyce/Jefford Track and Field Classic when it handed over its sponsorship cheque yesterday, as organisers prepare to host the Fifth Edition of Guyana’s most
rewarding competition.
R&D Engineering was one of the first companies to support the event when it was birthed back in 2010 and signalled its intention of maintaining support. The Boyce/Jefford Classic V will be held on August 16-17 at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground, Linden.
“We are happy to continue to be part of the Boyce/Jefford Track and Field Classic because we can honestly say that we have been there from the beginning, and in just five years, we’ve seen the magnitude of the meet,” Managing Director of R&D Engineering, Reginald Roach, indicated.
Roach said that his company will continue to be associated with the event and is proud that there has been much success over the period. Roach believes that the meet is good for Linden, and by an extension, Guyana and the development of athletics.
One of the founders of the Classic, Edison Jefford, said that athletes can only continue to develop if they have the right platform to do so; he said that the main aim of the meet is to give athletics a significant place in Guyana with a marquee event.
“I grew up in an athletics home. My father, Elton Jefford was one of the best, and after he died in 2008, this concept immediately came to life. I know the prominent place athletics had, so we are constantly trudging forward to resuscitate and build the sport,” Jefford said.
He said that without corporate support and the faithfulness of a group of sponsors, most of which has been with them from day one, the meet could not have achieved its goals. He thanked Roach for sharing their vision and promised yet another classic showdown.
The meet offers a total of $1.4M in cash prizes for clubs and anther $700,000 in individual cash prizes. In addition, the top performers will receive medals and trophies while the clubs will also get trophies for the club championship.
