T&T trounce ICC Americas
By Zaheer Mohamed
Odean Smith grabbed 4-27 off nine overs and Mark Parchment stroked an unbeaten 45 to lead Jamaica to a convincing eight-wicket victory over Barbados when the Regional U-19 50-over tournament commenced yesterday.
Barbados’ decision to bat at the Georgetown Cricket Club backfired as they were bowled out for 97 in 37 overs. Joshua Drakes fought bravely for a top score of 33, but apart from Jafari Toppin (13), Nicholas Kirton (12) and Akil Greenidge (10), no other batsman managed to reach double figures.
The Jamaicans hardly encountered any difficulty in reply, reaching their target in 31.3 overs for the lost of two wickets.
Skipper Ramaal Lewis put Barbados on the back foot early on with the wicket of Lee-Germon Gaskin (03). Kirton and Greenidge added 24 for the second wicket, but their dismissal, with the score on 25, triggered a collapse which was somewhat aided by poor running between the wickets that resulted in three victims.
Barbados could take at least one positive from the game, the fact that Smith carried his bat.
He shared in a 19-run fourth wicket stand with Toppin and 26 for the eight wicket with Chad Williams (05) which was the best of the innings.
When Jamaica began their reply, Tariq Shorey (1-24) trapped Odaine Mc Catty (00) in front to give his team some hope, but that quickly faded by a third wicket stand of 49 between Leroy Lugg and Parchment.
Lugg showed glimpses of his class, he on-drive Shorey and punched him off the back foot for consecutive boundaries before he missed a full toss from Shamar Springer (1-18) and was LBW for 31.
Parchment stroked four fours and along with Shahid Crooks (12*) ensured no further hiccups with a third wicket partnership of 46. Jamaica pocketed 6.5 points and Barbados 0.2.
At Demerara Cricket Club, Trinidad and Tobago overcame ICC Americas by 164 runs. Batting first Trinidad and Tobago scored 254 all out in 48.3 overs.
Amir Gangoo stroked 95, Jemeel Maniram scored 43, Brian Christmas supported with 30 and Camillo Carimbocas 23. O. Bascome captured 3-35, N. Dutta 2-34, K. Phill 2-39 and F. Malik 2-47.
ICC Americas were skittled for 91 in 40.1 overs. Dutta top scored with 22. Akil Seetal snared 4-21, Justin Joseph 3-15 and Samuel Roopnarine 2-11.
