– beat Suriname in opening encounter
Defending champions in female basketball at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), Guyana made a winning start to their 2014 campaign Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, with the prolific and impressive Ginelle Ifill leading the local ladies.
Despite a slow offensive start, the Guyanese ladies showed enough character to defeat Suriname 44-34 in a low-scoring encounter. Ifill finished the game with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 20 rebounds for Guyana. Support came from Tamara Hunter, who had seven points and used her experience at the guard position to dismantle the opposing defence.
For Suriname, Janine Tuart had 16 points while Agida Eersgeling had nine points. The Guyanese ladies played French Guiana last night.
The Surinamese had raced to an early 7-2 lead before Guyana came charging back with a 5-0 run to end the first quarter 7-7 as both sides struggled offensively. Guyana went into halftime with a 17-15 advantage after Ifill started to warm-up in the paint.
The second half belonged to the home team with Ifill dominating the Surinamese on the boards and guards nailing jumpers. Guyana jumped out to a 10-point lead and never looked back against some full-court pressure defense that seemed to un-rattle them at times.
Meanwhile, Suriname routed French Guiana 61-47 to give the French males their second loss of the tournament after Guyana defeated them Friday night.
Gavin Kenshil scored 17 points while Emile LaRose dropped 12 points in the win for Suriname while Yaan Hande scored 18 points for French Guiana. (Edison Jefford)
