It was dubbed ‘Best of the Best’ and eight clubs participated when the 2nd edition of the Annual Martial Arts Championships concluded at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, July 27 last.
The Harpy Eagles Martial Arts Academy (HEMAA) secured several lucrative medals but eventually had to settle for third place. The officers of the Felix Austin Police College collaborated with those from the HEMAA to stage the Championships and they also won lucrative medals.
The HEMAA secured 9 gold medals, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals after their practitioners performed exceptionally well. Sensei Paul Ignatius won the top prize in the Kata and placed third in the sparring event while Annand Mahadeo finished second in both the kata and self-defence. Troy Bobb (jnr) finished at the top in the weapon kata and traditional kata respectively, while Deon Bobb secured two first places in kata and sparring.
Tim Pineande was 1st in the individual kata and 2nd in the team category, while Amitaba Persaud finished 1st in the kata.
On the distaff side, Tiffany Stewart clinched a 1st place in sparring with Constable Singh sealing off the 2nd place slot. Constable Benjamin secured 2 first places in sparring and grappling. Constable Ray Simon finished 3rd in grappling while his colleague, Constable Liverpool was third in the sparring category.
Constable Brown finished 3rd in sparring with Constable Erskine clinching a first place in self-defence. Other results were, Constables Keston Peters and Jason Thomas (3rd in sparring), in different categories, while Constable December finished second, also in the sparring category. The respective winners received trophies and medals for their efforts.
