Pandemonium broke out yesterday when a swarm of Africanized bees attacked an East Coast Demerara family, injuring an infant and two other persons.
Maureen Mc Almond of Lot 72 Rabindra Street, Annandale recounted that around 10:00 a.m. she was at home with her children when she saw her neighbour running from his back yard.
He was weeding at the time. “I didn’t know why he was running until the swarm started to enter my windows and attack my children.”
The woman said that she acted quickly in an attempt to protect her family.
“The children were watching television and I put them under the mosquito net and hid some of them in the car. My son was changing the window curtains when he got stung in his head, but my daughter and her baby, who were in the yard, got stung in their faces. It is swollen.”
Ms. Mc Almond said her neighbour subsequently lit a fire and the smoke assisted in chasing the bees away.
“This is first time that we know bees at the back there. I am just grateful because it could have been worse. Now we will have to report it to the Ministry of Agriculture to get a bee catcher to deal with that situation before it re-occurs.”
