For the second time in local football history, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United has qualified for the CONCACAF League Championships after they had defeated Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) playoff in Jamaica earlier this year.
Now those players are set to enhance their reputation when they square off against a Honduran team on August 5 followed by another encounter against a USA team, Portland Timbers on August 19. President of the local football unit, Odinga Lumumba, said that despite the meagre response from corporate Guyana, all systems are in place for the local ball weavers to better their performance this time around. The players were encamped for approximately three weeks and Lumumba is confident that they will prevail in their first encounter against Honduras at the National Stadium, Providence, Tuesday, August 5. They will then oppose Portland Timbers on August 19 before their other two matches on August 28 and September 23.
Lumumba was joined by his Vice President, Steve Ninvalle and coach, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover and spoke with the media yesterday morning at the Water Chris Hotel, Waterloo Street. He assured that he has done all within his power to facilitate a victory for his charges and hinted that the team of 28 players may be joined by an additional pair of guest players, dependent on the success of his executives in resolving visa issues for at least one of the players from Nigeria.
“The players are fit and the period of encampment has aided in the chemistry,” said Lumumba. However, the Alpha boss continues to bemoan the absence of adequate corporate support to offset the huge sums necessary to prepare the team for this level of competition and he chided members of the business sector. “It is a pity that our players continue to be affected by inadequate funding; it is time that the corporate community understand the importance of their support for such national ventures,” said Lumumba.
Notwithstanding, he singled out several individuals and corporations that have rendered support including Michael Cummings Electrical, Ansa McAl, Colin Baker, and the Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation. Other supporting entities and individuals included Head of the GDF, Mark Phillips, Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud, Superintendent of Police, Colin Boyce, administrators of the Georgetown Football Club, those of Survival Supermarket and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Frank Anthony.
Lumumba also acknowledged the hard work of his technical staff including coach, Wayne Dover, Manager, Rawle Adams, his assistant, Mark Xavier and Frank Parris.
