A simple thanksgiving service followed by many kind sentiments directed to Lillian Elliot, as she reached another milestone on Thursday. She is regarded as Essequibo’s oldest. Elliot is 106 years old. She was born on July 31, 1908.
And this is not the first time the county of Essequibo has celebrated one of its own who lived to be 105. Almost four years ago, Essequibo’s oldest resident at the time, Millicent Jackson died at 105. Like Elliot, Jackson, who was however visually impaired, lived alone at her Reliance residence. She was a very pleasant, active old woman. Jackson died in her sleep after complaining of feeling unwell.
Norma Estob, one of Elliot’s daughters, who continues to care her mother, said that her mother was treated to a simple thanksgiving service on Thursday, at Mashabo. Lillian Elliot has been residing at Mashabo ever since she relocated from Pomeroon many years ago.Estob said that her mother is not a burden. She said that at 106 her mother bathes at the creek at Mashabo and would even attend to her ground provision farm. She says her mother’s daily diet consists of cassava bread with steamed fish.
An ardent churchgoer, Elliot is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, at Mashabo. Estob said that her mother who was born in Torurab, St. Monica, a community located in the Upper Pomeroon River, lived with her then husband Theophilus Miguel and eight of ten children for many years before relocating to Mashabo, another Amerindian Community.
Elliot was forced to work as a ground provision farmer on her brother-in-law’s farm after her husband died. She never remarried but found a friend in her Religion. God has been good to her and she would never trade him for anything, she said.
Her belief in God contributed significantly to her longevity, her daughter Estob said. Elliot continues to exhibit good health but she suffers periodic lapses in her memory. Her wish is to live as long as the Lord would allow her.
Elliot was surrounded by her huge family – seventy grand children and nineteen great-grand children. Her philosophy to a good life is to consume small portions of food and pray without ceasing.
Several years ago Elliot and another centenarian were treated to lunch by Imam Bacchus and Sons Limited.
