DEAR EDITOR,
The slaughter of innocent men, women and children by the Israeli military deserves the full condemnation of the international community. The fact that such slaughter took place recently in a building which belonged to the United Nations speaks to the total disregard by Israel of international norms and protocols.
What is even more depressing is the fact that the authorities in Israel were repeatedly informed of the fact that civilians were seeking shelter in the building, but this appeared to be of little or no consequence to the Israeli military who were bent in their pre-determined actions.
This is not the first such attack on UN buildings, but this bombing in the still hours of the night was cowardly and barbaric.
The actions were rightly condemned by both the United Nations and the United States administration as indeed peace-loving people and organizations throughout the world. Both the PPP and the PPP/C administration are on record as having condemned the military strikes in Gaza and calling for an immediate halt. The CIOG and the Guyana Islamic Trust and other civil organizations in Guyana have also voiced their condemnation of the Israeli actions.
There can be no justification for the actions of the Israeli military in the wanton and indiscriminate bombings which have claimed the lives of over one thousand Palestinians, the vast majority of whom were civilians whose only ‘crime’ was being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
There seems to be no safe haven as far as Palestinians are concerned, not even United Nations buildings. This is a slap in the face of both the United States and the United Nations, who continue to use a kid glove approach in dealing with the atrocities of the Israeli authorities.
There is need for a more robust and no-nonsense approach by the international community in dealing with Israel, which continues to use disproportionate force against the Palestinian people.
The time is long overdue for a permanent and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue which must take into account the legitimate concerns of the Palestinian people for a land that they could truly call their home.
